Aspect followed up their version of Sonic 2 with Sonic Chaos. You can tell this was made after the "real" Sonic 2 because Chaos resembles it a lot more closely, with better attempts at stuff like the loops, corkscrews, ramps, etc..

That being said, it still does its own thing. This is the first game to start diverging the playable characters. Sonic has an enhanced version of his Peel Out from CD, now known as the Strike Dash, and he has an exclusive Rocket Shoes powerup that lets him fly at high speeds. Tails, on the other hand, can fly, and this is the first game where you can make him fly.
There are also Special Stages finally, and these are accessed by getting 100 rings in a level. Instead of the traditional halfpipe or blue spheres, each Special Stage is a different platforming challenge. There are also only five emeralds to collect, as Eggman gives up the 6th after you beat him. For some reason only Sonic can get to the special stages and get the good ending.

While Aspect's Sonic 2 is arguably the hardest Sonic game, Sonic Chaos kind of overcorrected and is arguably the easiest, even more than Sonic Forces. The levels are roughly 30 seconds each, and even getting the 100 rings required for a special stage is easy considering they'll throw five or so ring monitors in a row in almost every level. IMO, there are only three hard things in the game: the last two special stages and Eggman's boss fight.
