Metroid: Other M - Into the Fire (Part 11)
Samus's Log: "So hot...Adam, just let me...use the Varia Suit. So...hot. Adam...please....STOP. MAKE IT STOP."
________
I promised you all a rant last time, didn't I? At the risk of beating a dead horse...this entire jaunt through the Pyrosphere is stupid. Adam has someone under his command (who is following orders more out of courtesy than anything else) who is SLOWLY DYING and won't give her the order to activate a VITAL function of her suit. Other weapons get an excuse for not being used. The Ice Beam DOES seem situational, sure, and the Power Bomb is talked up a lot with being destructive. I'm fine with those being limited, but there is NO reason whatsoever that completely harmless powers are gated behind this "authorization" system. We're supposed to be searching for survivors, right? So why prevent Samus from using the Grapple Beam, or Space Jump? Why force her to take damage from heat constantly? My only conclusion is that Adam is being a prick, enjoying watching Samus suffer because she slighted him for a yet-to-be-explained reason.
As for Samus, having NO self-preservation and willingly giving up agency to TURN HER VARIA SUIT ON just shows she's got issues. She has to be suicidal, or at the very least, SUPER guilty and thinking that she deserves this abuse...that's the only way I can begin to justify this.
This sequence isn't QUITE as long as I remembered, but it's still absolutely ridiculous.
What else to talk about? Molten men emerging straight from lava to attack us...oh and a new mini-boss, Asborean! An odd creature, it's a worm that inhabits a suit of armor! Mostly slithering around on the ground, the armor resists all attacks, so you have to either aim for the vulnerable belly or the worm when exposed...and even then, it's not easy! Thing can do some nasty self-destructing attacks too, so keep your distance. Even once you rip it out of the armor it can still coil around you and explode!
All this leads to our boss for the area...Goyagma! Yeah, we just had a boss last time, but here's another! I found this one pretty tricky in my first playthrough...mostly because Sensemove either didn't work or had strange timing. All you need to really do is jump over most of it's attacks, really. Honestly, it feels like a remix of Brug Mass. Still kinda cool though. I'll dock this game for a LOT of stuff, but the enemy encounters in general are pretty cool.
But then they screw it up. Why did we even come to the Pyrosphere? To stop that creature! Oh...but now that we've nearly died from extreme heat, let's leave and go to Sector 2 to look for survivors! Uh...what is everyone ELSE doing, Adam? I realize, we're the hero, so in the end we have to do all the work anyway, but at least TRY to look like the others are doing something! Never mind the fact that if we could ONLY use our Grapple Beam, we'd be able to continue our pursuit, but Adam doesn't even seem to see that as an option...
Join me for more griping next time!
