MiSTer FPGA - Wolfenstein 3D / DOS PC-486
Better Wolf3D (controls) mod: https://www.moddb.com/mods/better-wolf3d/
The originator of FPS games. Not the first game ever to use the techniques involved, but the best one that had been made to date, by far. I remember playing games like Catacomb 3D before this released, and being blown away by the 3D graphics at the time. It's no surprise that the geniuses at iD Software were behind both of these, and continued to revolutionize gaming for the coming decade with new technologies that pushed 3D further and further, into the modern engines we see today. Most modern 3D game engines today actually have source derived from iD's endeavors in the 90's, including the newest Call of Duty games.
When it comes to legendary gaming developers, iD Software is top-tier in my book, alongside other greats like Capcom, Konami, Sega, and Nintendo.
Back when this game released, it was standard to use keyboard-only controls in a game like this, so the input is not as refined as modern FPS players are used to. As such, even the mouse control is a bit wonky feeling, with forward and backward movement actually moving you forward and back. This makes mouse control pretty much useless out of the box, but I found a recently released mod that modernizes the controls, and gives you dedicated strafe buttons along with removing the forward and back mouse movement. Luckily, this seems to work perfectly with the original DOS version. Many mods only work with modern ports of the game or are specifically meant for emulators like DOSbox, so this was a nice discovery, and has a transformative effect on the game, with it now allowing for smooth control.
This mod also adds a mini-map in the bottom right corner, which feels downright essential now that I come back and play the game again. Getting lost in the labyrinthine levels just isn't as fun as it used to be, so this is a breath of fresh air for folks looking to keep track of where things are. It is a bit cheap in that you can clearly see where secrets are, but overall it helps with enjoyment of the game considerably- now making it easier to make your way back to the end door after you find the key, etc. There is a version without the mini-map in the link above, if you would prefer that.
Gamepad controls work well as an alternative- just be sure to set the OSD option to "4 button gamepad" and select "Gravis Gamepad" in the game's options before binding your buttons in the options.
Check below for speed settings. I'm using "full speed", which results in the buzzing sound you hear when you bump against walls and open doors, as the sound samples cycle too quickly, but this gives you the best framerate.
