MiSTer FPGA - The Adventures of Dr. Franken / SNES (Super Famicom)
The sequel to the two previous Game Boy games, this one is a heavy departure from the formula in the originals.. for better and for worse. I first heard about this sequel from SNESdrunk, in his recent video: https://youtu.be/BUgS8QX0WZg . Check his channel out if you haven't yet.
First off, the game is no longer MetroidVania style. It's more of an action platformer now, with a bit of a puzzle element. The pixel art in this game is pretty good, just like the previous games. The smooth scrolling is really nice as well, and the music is well made, though seems kind of oddly placed in such a game. Has a very Euro vibe to it.
Difficulty in this game is pretty ridiculous, and as SNESdrunk talked about in his video, seems to be tailored to Blockbuster rentals where you didn't want people beating the game in a weekend. Starting you off with half a health bar each life is unusually punishing considering how much damage enemies do to you, and the sometimes questionable hitboxes. A great way to counter this artificial difficulty spike, is to use a simple Game Genie code that makes it so that health pick-up items restore you to full health, instead of just giving you a bar or two. This makes the game much more enjoyable and is how you see the game being played in this video. MiSTer comes pre-installed with cheat codes for most consoles, including SNES, and they are easily accessed through the OSD as you see me do during the title/demo roll at the beginning.
If you play this one, I *highly* suggest you turn that specific code on, to make this a more fair and enjoyable experience, otherwise it is a barely playable and frustrating game that you will drop in a very short amount of time.
There is some nice variety to the levels, going all over the world and somewhat expanding upon what they tried to do in Dr. Franken II for Game Boy. There is some good pixel art to check out if you take the time to go through a couple of the stages and search around, and the music is decent if you enjoy dance music as well.
The goofy bit of moving and ducking at the beginning was just me making Dr. Franken dance around to the oddly placed music. I'll take whatever fun I can find during a pandemic Halloween. Be safe everyone.
