Nosferatu has been recommended to me several times over the years and I never sat down to give it a try until now. I have mixed feelings about this one, but overall a positive experience. First off, the graphics, sound and atmosphere are really nice in this. It carries a dark foreboding nature from the very start, and for good reason- the game wants to kill you. Repeatedly. If you thought early traditional Castlevania games were tough, this is on a whole new level. One hit deaths in this game are everywhere, from spikes dropping at variable speeds from the ceiling, to pits that give you an instant death either from height or because of the carefully-placed spikes all over the bottom. This is a game where the levels are the bosses, and the boss fights are pretty tame in comparison to the gauntlets you must make it through to even see them.

Power up your character by collecting red gems- up to 9, with each three that you collect giving you a new attack power level, along with new fighting combos for your character. These gems are extremely easy to lose though, because apparently the main character has the loosest pockets in the world. Hit a wall too hard? Off a gem goes flying and you power down your character. It doesn't take health away, just annoyingly downgrades you. Enemies will commonly take your gems as well if you let them hit you, with some of them putting you in a kind of blender where you will get knocked down and lose 3 or 4 of them if you aren't careful. This makes dealing with most larger enemies an act of staying at the edge of their spawn area, and cheesing them from the point where they would normally turn around and pace back the other way. If you try to fight these enemies normally, there are seemingly random aspects that will make it so they just ignore your punches and push-back and just plow over you, resulting in a downgraded character with fewer gems in your pockets. Once you observe the patterns of the enemies and know where to stand at, it becomes much easier, until you start having to contend with variable speed spikes coming out of the ceiling that give you an instant Game Over. This is the toughest part of the game, IMO, and the slow lead-up speed into the player's running animation makes this a real pain in the butt. You will die a *lot* while learning this game, and the penalty is steep, as you cannot get the real/good ending unless you finish it in fewer than 7 lives/continues (1 life per continue in this).

I was able to make it to the end of stage 3 in this video with 1 life, which was pretty close to my goal for this video of completing the first three stages without continuing. If you like your Halloween games to be the ultra-punishing variety, then this one is for you. Good luck.
