MiSTer FPGA - Decap Attack / Genesis (Mega Drive)
This is my first time ever playing Decap Attack, and its a really fun game! Another Discord recommendation for this Halloween pick- you play as Chuck D. Head in this side scrolling platformer, with a couple of odd attacks and a pack full of various potions. There is a special item you must find on each stage's 3rd level, in order to progress after you beat the boss. If you miss it, you have to back-track afterwards to find it, otherwise you cannot continue. Luckily there is no time limit, so the gameplay is somewhat similar to Sonic CD, only a bit more forgiving since it has no time limits and a selection of powerups. I was saving the potions for later stages that I had never played before, but I still wasn't able to take down the stage 5 boss in this run. Didn't really know how to approach him, so I ended the video after dying there. I think after learning the boss strategies this one should be a pretty easy 1cc though. Graphics, gameplay and sound are all on-point in this one. Pretty impressive for the Genesis and a standout game for the platform IMO.
Similar to Mario Bros. 2 in the USA, this is a completely reskinned version of the Japanese game "Magical Hat no Buttobi Tābo! Daibōken". I gave both of them a try and I think I prefer this one! It's just a very unique looking and playing game, and the JP original comes across as a bit bland in comparison, even though its essentially the same thing. The JP original is definitely worth a try for fans of Decap Attack, with many changes in the level layouts that make it a bit more than just a different coat of paint.
Here is a video that shows the differences in JP and USA versions side-by-side: https://youtu.be/2bLqH8TbOtQ
