MiSTer FPGA - Kid Dracula (悪魔城すぺしゃる ぼくドラキュラくん) / Game Boy
This is a game I've wanted to try for a long time, and was on the fence about whether to try the Famicom original or Game Boy version first. Decided the give the Game Boy version a spin and found it an enjoyable experience from start to finish. The best way I can describe the game is a mash-up of Castlevania and Mega Man. Kid Dracula has a mega buster style magical attack, which he can power up into a super shot. When you beat stages, you get a new powerup that can either increase your attack power and angle of attack, or improve your mobility with certain abilities.
The game is generally very easy, though some sections will take a bit of trial and error to get through your first time. After making it through the first time though, it should be a breeze when you come back to it. This video is my 2nd time playing through the game, shortly after playing through to learn the structure of the levels and boss patterns.
Extra lives are ridiculously easy to obtain via the between-stage minigames, with my favorite being the balloon bounce game, which usually will net me between 6 - 9 lives per try. You get to attempt these minigames by spending 10 coins, which you can easily get by using your charged-up main weapon on enemies, or subweapons. On some stages you can farm these coins if you want, but there is really no reason to, since you should have a bunch of them from just normally going through anyways. Avoid the rock paper scissor and sword stab minigames. They are not worth it at all, compared to the other two options.
I highly recommend giving this a go, as its a fun romp from start to finish and has some great music to keep you engaged and tight responsive controls. Another hit from classic Konami.
