MiSTer FPGA - The Secret of Monkey Island [VGA Roland MT-32 Ultimate Talkie Edition] / DOS PC-486
I decided to revisit Monkey Island VGA for the first time since the 90's a couple days ago, and was delighted to play through the fan-made "Ultimate Talkie Edition" which adds in the voices from the 2009 remake of the game along with the original MT-32 score and improved digital samples. This is the ultimate way to play the classic VGA version of the game, for sure. The voices fit amazingly well!
Before this, I decided to play through the EGA version and was surprised by a number of things that had been changed when they converted it to VGA. Mark Ferrari's excellent EGA graphics work still holds up in some ways that the VGA version doesn't quite live up to, but still the VGA version is an improvement in most areas. It's mostly minor nitpicks with some missing animations and background art that seems less lively in parts- most notably the background sunset colors/animation on Melee Island's docks. I'll make a video for the EGA release sometime in the future once I work out the type of filtering I want to use for it, as it had quite a different look than the VGA Mode 13h graphics in this game. My goal is to more-closely show it how it would look on a period-appropriate EGA monitor & it will take more time and experimentation for that.
This took a lot of time with multiple playthroughs before recording to note the different dialogue branches and I tried to tie-in the running gags throughout the game in this playthrough. It was also a goal to approach things in a fluid and sensible way that would be easy to follow even for folks that haven't played through the game before. One thing that might not make sense to new viewers is why Guybrush just doesn't dispatch LeChuck instantly in the wedding scene, but I couldn't resist the opportunity to call him Felicity. 😅 It's not as entertaining a scene with Guybrush just saying the bottle is jammed with pocket lint all of a sudden, but I can see how this could be confusing to folks who aren't aware of what's going on there.
