MiSTer FPGA - Spy Hunter [Wheel & Pedals] (スパイハンター) / Bally Midway Arcade [PB: 75,895]
After learning some handy button combinations on my T300RS to change the wheel radius to 270 degree without drivers, I can now play Spy Hunter perfectly with analog wheel & pedals! I tried playing this with my wheel a long time ago and thought it had deadzone issues in analog mode, but it turns out the large 900 degree default radius on my wheel is what caused that. Classic arcade racers just aren't made for that kind of radius, but luckily Thrustmaster includes many handy hardware key combinations to make a wide variety of experiences possible.
For anyone else using a T300 series wheel (and possibly others) the key combination to reduce the radius is Dpad Left + Mode. Tap this combination together until you see the LED on front blink only once, indicating 270 degree mode.

A wheel like this with many buttons within easy reach turns out to be the perfect fit for Spy Hunter. This was an excellent experience, closely mirroring the arcade feeling. I bound the gear shift function to the clutch pedal where you only have to hold it in for low gear, as it's only really needed when first starting and when continuing from van upgrades and crashes. Feels great after a little practice.
Spy Hunter was one of my favorite games to play on an actual arcade cab, back when you could find them everywhere. It had a standard pedal/shifter driving game setup, with a unique steering wheel that included buttons & triggers for both hands, to use a variety of weapons and deterrents for your vehicle.
Originally you would have a panel on the dashboard that would light up to indicate which items you currently have equipped, and this is replaced in emulated versions with a simple text readout at the bottom of the screen.
Staying alive for longer stretches in this game has the added bonus of allowing you to hear more of the awesome soundtrack, which is an electronic adaptation of the Peter Gunn theme by Henry Mancini. Very cool stuff, though the core has issues with triggering the music/sfx sometimes. I noticed occasionally when starting the game that the theme fails to play, and this also happens randomly when entering the restock van while playing. Attract mode sound also isn't working.
Spy Hunter is compatible with a wide range of analog controls/spinners, and Sorg says that a modified PS1 Namco JogCon is an excellent choice for experiencing this. This modification will be a built-in mode for JogCon with MiSTer Addons' upcoming Reflex USB controller board. That will be great to try also!
