MiSTer FPGA - Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge [VGA MT-32 Ultimate Talkie Edition] / DOS PC-486
Following up my previous video for Monkey Island 1 with the Ultimate Talkie hack, I decided to play through the sequel this week with the same hack and this one seems to have not made it out of beta and may never at this point. This is a full playthrough with all the easter eggs I could find. I had to re-record some of the segments in this video several times to get them to play through properly, but wanted to exhibit the full game here to show the insane amount of work done on this patch already. This is using the most recent 0.2 version of the hack, and the main issue is that it freezes sometimes. Some VOGONS threads seem to point at PS/2 mouse drivers as the culprit, but I'm not sure.
-Common freeze points with the UTE v0.2 hack (save often!):
*Top option when speaking with Largo at start.
*Ending of Largo voodoo doll scene.
*Ask pirate on beach to sing a song first time.
*Reading the book "Great Shipwrecks".
*Saying "She named her dog GuyBrush?" to the gardener when trying to escape with the map from Gov. Marley's mansion.
There are probably twice as many voice lines in this game, and much more advanced audio implementation in general with the MT-32 music, with tracks having multiple variations depending on where you are in an area, actions being performed, and who you are talking to even. It makes for a very seamless and magical experience, that isn't really done in modern games with the entire music track usually just recorded and played back from disc or HDD. The music is louder than MI1 also- I had to reduce the MT-32 volume to a gain setting of 0.75 in the mt32-pi's ini config, so voices are all audible here.
There is a "Low Memory" error that pauses the game briefly during the spit competition on Booty Island later into the video, and this seems to only happen when you have a lot of items in your inventory when on that particular screen. I couldn't find any way to prevent it happening, so most likely the only way is to tackle that section as soon as possible when you have fewer inventory items. Only a momentary pause, but worth mention because the rest of the video is seamless here.
Michael Land's awesome MT-32 score is presented in this video via the excellent mt32-pi project by Dale Whinham: https://github.com/dwhinham/mt32-pi
