Next up is the Sparkling Waters representative of Superstar Road. There's no relaxing at the beach though--it is easily the LEAST relaxing stage in this whole game, because the whole time Mairo is underwater, which is most of the stage, a Cheep Chomp is on Mario's tail! Well, if he had one. (And he would if he's Flying Squirrel Mario. But he isn't in this video.)

There have been other stages where an enemy pursues Mario underwater, most notably the Dragoneels in the regular Sparkling Waters stages, but the Cheep Chomp stands apart from the other. Well, maybe it swims apart, but you get the idea. The Cheep Chomp is not only faster than Mario and needs a lot of fireballs to take down, but it can track Mario much better than any other aquatic chaser in this game. Also, a new one pops up not long after one of them is taken out.

Because of the Cheep Chomp's relentlessness, speed, and accuracy, as well as walls of enemies that, if you can't open fire yourself (and if you do, you'll let the Cheep Chomp catch up), you must get Cheep Chomp to knock them out of the way for you, Swim for Your Life! is widely considered to be one of the hardest stages in this game, and to a lot of people, THE hardest. It's not the sort of thing that's convincingly hard until you play it for yourself, or maybe see it for yourself. Mario's options are quite limited in this stage.
