Next: Spinning Platforms of Doom

Moving on, here is the representative for Frosted Glacier, set in an icy cavern with giant hammers swinging around everywhere, hence the name: Hammerswing Caverns.

Yeah, the fact that the watery ocean stage is Superstar Road-3 and the icy snowy stage is Superstar Road-4 further suggests that, while Sparkling Waters and Frosted Glacier are unlocked at the same time and both lead to Soda Jungle, Sparkling Waters is supposed to come first. Not that people would take that first without knowing, as people tend to prioritize north over south. (Sorry, all you people from the southern hemisphere who are reading this description.)

This stage introduces a new gimmick, which is pretty rare for Superstar Road, as it's more often about combining gimmicks or using them in unexpected ways, and those are the pendulum-like hammer-shaped platforms. They essentially function as unusually-shaped, unusually-moving platforms that all move in unison with each other, and I guess the low friction of ice means they don't slow down much. Or at all. Because of the stage's near-total reliance on this gimmick, it feels more like a mid-game stage with the difficulty cranked up, with icicles and Buzzy Beetles in the worst locations. Not to mention the hammerswing platforms whose pivots move on rails about halfway through and onwards, which limit Mario's mobility a lot.

Nevertheless, I consider this the easiest of the Superstar Road stages. I died once the first time playing it, and this run as Mini Mario was a piece of cake too. Of course, the increased aerial mobility of Mini Mario certainly doesn't hurt either.

To unlock Hammerswing Caverns, get every Star Coin in Frosted Glacier.
