Now, castle stages tend to be a step above the rest of the world in terms of difficulty, or at least they look more dangerous. And that's exactly the case with Pendulum Castle, which is a step above most of Superstar Road. Or, to some people, ALL of Superstar Road. Every Super Mario platformer has that one stage that is infamous for its maddening difficulty, and Pendulum Castle is the most-cited one for New Super Mario Bros. U, which is already considered a pretty tough Mario game.
The majority of this stage involves getting really, really close to various swinging ball-and-chains. In a way, this makes the stage similar to Fire Bar Cliffs, another stage I had major problems with, only there are way more Donut Lifts here than in Fire Bar Cliffs, and them being swinging, they rock back and forth. Also, Bony Beetles. But at least there are no uphill climbs.
Mini Mario decidedly has the advantage over Small Mario in this stage due to the Donut Lifts not falling under Mario's feet and his greater mobility in the air, though his slow speed will cause problems, as the ball-and-chains' swinging speed is meant for the other variations of Mario.
Remember, also, that Donut Lift platforms cannot be pushed against from the side. I accidentally dunked Mario into the abyss right before the flagpole forgetting that these are not like the normal brick steps you'd normally see in front of the flagpole.
