"The silver Swan, who living had no Note,
when Death approached, unlocked her silent throat.
Leaning her breast against the reedy shore,
thus sang her first and last, and sang no more:
'Farewell, all joys! O Death, come close mine eyes!
More Geese than Swans now live, more Fools than Wise.'" - Orlando Gibbons, The Silver Swan

Another server rose, and fell. This will probably be my last Assassin video on Perfect World Void; or at the very least, this iteration of Perfect World Void. In 1-2 weeks, the server will be wiped and become Perfect World Nexus. But who knows what that entails? Regardless, it will no longer be the same server that you see now.

It seems all servers eventually suffer this same fate. Epic Perfect World has been the only server to escape it, so far. In my opinion, there are 4 main reasons that contribute to the death of a PvP server.

1. Significant division of opinion in what is acceptable amounts of PvE. Some won't play servers with PvE, while others won't play servers without PvE, yet you need both player base for a server to survive in the long run.

2. No incentive to start PK. Alot of players only PK when someone calls for PK, but then that leads to a chicken and egg problem where you can't call for PK if no one is PKing.

3. Ability to deny PK. There is no penalty for someone to just take the win after 1 round, or just refuse PK altogether. Or alternatively, there is no incentive for a guild to keep PKing even if their opposition is still up for more rounds. This results in a vicious cycle where fewer and fewer people PK.

4. Inability to win PK. For most people, a win is when all of their opponents die simultaneously. However, this definition hugely favors the guild with more numbers if respawn is allowed. Because the more numbers you have, the less likely it is for everyone to be dead simultaneously.

For issue #1, we experienced this when Void decided to introduce additional farming and upset a lot of people. How Epic managed to avoid this is a mystery to me. Perhaps it is just because they've been around for so long as one of the first PvE servers, allowing players a lot of time to become familiar with the server and gear up. This lets them introduce more and more PvE gradually over time, as opposed to all at once.

With regards to issue #2, we can see this quite clearly when fighting against Savagery. Most of the time, Savagery players rarely leave Safe Zone, or even log in. The only time we see Savagery in full force is when Junior calls for PK. Yet, during those times, their numbers are so overwhelming that there is no PK to be had. This puts all the pressure of maintaining PK on one person. So when Junior decided to give up PKing, the entire guild just disappeared.

Savagery abused Issue #3 a lot. Quite often, Savagery will refuse PK unless they have at least 2x the opposition's numbers. And even so, more than once, they decided to go to safe zone and "take the win" when the opposition are eager for more. Over time, people get tired of this behavior, and just decide to do the same thing back. "If you won't give us PK with fair numbers, why should we give you PK?" type of mentality. And as people get tired of each other and stop logging for PK, the entire reason to play a PvP server goes away as well.

Issue #4 is more of an overarching issue with Perfect World in general. A lot of the times, you'll see people complain that PK is "just a numbers game." And as a result, they become dissatisfied with Perfect World as a whole, and move on to different games. However, this is only true given the above definition of winning PK. If PK were more objective based, like Territory Wars, Nation Wars, Dragon Temple, etc. then skill and strategy will matter a lot more. But if the objective is simply to kill everyone before they respawn, then of course it is a numbers game. Yet the sad thing is, all these objective based events are designed for larger servers, and most people who play private servers never get to truly experience them.

I make videos to share with you guys the best of my PvP experiences, so we can all enjoy it. At the same time, I hope that my videos would also help promote the server I am playing on to people who are not aware of it. Yet, there is not much I can do when those who play the server prefer to dislike my video with no feedback, as opposed to sharing them, as seen on "Daily Sodium Intake".

A Swan Song refers to a final gesture or performance, given before dying or retirement. Fitting name. I will see you all on the next server.

I hope you enjoy the video!
