"Einstellung" – Black Desert Online [Ninja PvP]
"Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less." - C. S. Lewis
I feel it can be too easy to get preoccupied with competition, and forget why we played the game in the first place. Back in the olden days, when I took up PvPing for the very first time, I worried very little whether I won or lost. It was challenging to fight people. It was something fun to do. So why is it that nowadays, fights can sometimes feel so vexing? Why is it that defeats feel discouraging, while victories feel inconsequential?
It wasn't always like this. But perhaps this feeling is simply an artifact of time. See, the longer you've been around, the more skills you pick up, the more knowledge you gain, the more experiences you acquire. It's easier to stick to things that are tried and true, rather than coming up with solutions from scratch every time. But when dealing with something completely new, such as different games in a genre as open ended as MMORPGs, past knowledge and muscle memory can sometimes end up as a hindrance rather than a blessing. What used to be the optimal strategy on one game can instead turn out to be a poor option on another. And when what was thought to be old and reliable knowledge fail catastrophically, it's easy to just sit back and tell myself "I'm too bad of a player to play this game" and call it a day. After all, if something that has always worked for years suddenly stopped working one day, I'm probably just doing something wrong, no? Well, it can sure feel like it... In some ways, it may have been better to have had no prior experiences at all. It would've been better to have been a complete beginner to PvPing, like I was many years ago.
Loss aversion is human nature though. We feel defeats more so than victories. It's easy to spend time focusing more on the loss itself, and miss the the improvements gained from the experience. And once all is said and done, it's tempting to rationalize this thought as just an attempt to "be humble". "It's too pretentious to focus on the things I did well, right...?" Yet the truth is, self-deprecation has nothing to do with humility. Being humble means we shouldn't brag about ourselves, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't still recognize achievements earned, new knowledge gained, and accomplishments made.
Right now, open world PvP is fun for me. It is the one unique feature of MMOs that no other genres provide. It is why I still choose to play MMOs instead of any other game. I didn't go around picking games for the purpose of being good at them right from the get-go. I picked games because they were fun, and I got better at them over time because I wanted to improve, because I continued to enjoy the challenge... Being competitive and having fun doesn't have to be mutually exclusive. In fact, maybe they go hand in hand. And I think ultimately, this realization is what really matters.
So that's what I'll keep on doing. Enjoy the game with friends who are playing; remember the ones who are no longer with us; and all the while maintain a "beginner's mind" to continue improving.
I hope you enjoy the video!
"Einstellung is the development of a mechanized state of mind. Often called a problem solving set, Einstellung refers to a person's predisposition to solve a given problem in a specific manner even though better or more appropriate methods of solving the problem exist."
