Evolved Perfect World : Memory Lane [○Mage PvP]
"Nostalgia is a file that removes the rough edges from the good old days." - Doug Larson
Merry Christmas everyone!
Ever since Perfect World Void died, I've been looking for a new server to play on, but there honestly aren't alot of good options. Aside from Epic, Evolved Perfect World was the only other server I've found that was both active, and had a reasonable and achievable gearing process. The only catch is - it is a 1.3 server!
There tends to be alot of strong opinions with regards to 1.3 servers. Some would have you believe that 1.3 was the pinnacle of skillful gameplay, with its many mechanical intricacies. Yet, others would argue that 1.3 was the worst iteration of Perfect World, essentially boiling it down to first stun win. To tell the truth, I probably wouldn't have given the server a shot if this was a few years ago. But nowadays, I no longer subscribe to the belief of there being only one true version Perfect World that servers ought to follow. I now view Perfect World as a whole to be the game we all love, with each server merely being different interpretations of it. Some interpretations of the game may be awful, but nevertheless, the game itself can continue to be beautiful.
Although I didn't have a strong opinion of 1.3, deep down there may have been a part of me that actually wanted to play it. Maybe it is not so much nostalgia, but rather, it is a sense of unfinished business. Way back in 2011, when Fake Perfect World was still alive and kicking, I've set out to create an insta mage. However, creating such a mage required crafting of 4 ornaments each with Channeling -6% x2. The probability of crafting such ornaments is extremely low, and despite mats being completely free, I never managed to get my hands on even a single one. And so I never got to experience an insta mage on 1.3.
I've had plenty of experience with insta mage on 1.4 and 1.5, yes, but 1.3 insta was different. On 1.3, we have what I'd like to call "true insta" (also commonly known as nocast). When you have insta channel on a modern day server, you'll get 0 channeling for your skills, but you're still ultimately constrained by the casting time that cannot be reduced in anyway. Yet, a very odd bug in 1.3 made it such that at sufficiently high -channeling, your skills not only have 0 channeling, but also 0 casting time! It is then that you are truly casting your skills instantly.
Balanced? Maybe, maybe not. Easy class? Maybe, maybe not. In a way, I think both the pro-1.3 and anti-1.3 arguments can be true in their own way. 1.3 does take skill, but not in the same way 1.4/1.5 does. 1.3 focuses alot more on mechanical skills, such as actually pressing my skills in the right order despite being true insta, as well as positional skill and map awareness. Getting backstabbed is many times more scary on 1.3, since you literally can't do anything once you are stunned (not even change targets). So your team have to focus a lot on supporting each other by stunning attackers, and watching out for backstabbers. On the other hand, CC breaks in 1.4/1.5 puts most of the skill ceiling into resource management. You are no longer doomed if you get backstabbed. Instead, the question becomes whether you're able to cycle your defenses to survive indefinitely, or whether you're going to die shortly thereafter when your immune time runs out.
All in all, having spent most of my time on 1.4/1.5, I would say that this experience was nothing like I expected, and it definitely was nothing like I remembered. Whether that is a good or bad thing, remains to be determined. One thing is for sure though, unlike the video "I'm Still Alive", having friends with me in mass pk this time around made everything all the more enjoyable.
And so, here is my first attempt at playing true insta mage on 1.3. I hope you enjoy the video!
