New Year 2022 is here in Pokémon Sword & Shield, from January 1st till January 9th, Pokémon that are themed around luck will be appearing in Max Raid Battles, those Pokémon are Magikarp, Meowth, Sudowoodo, and Darmanitan, and if you are wondering, it is the Unova variant of Darmanitan that is appearing in this event, and there is a very rare chance of finding a Shiny Magikarp during this event, and each of the Max Raid Battles from those Pokémon will always give you a Big Nugget and a bunch of Nuggets, this is a good way to get some money, as you can sell Nuggets for a good amount of money.
I will go over each of the Pokémon you can find there, starting things off is Magikarp, and there is a rare chance of a guaranteed Shiny Magikarp, its Hidden Ability is Rattled, this turns into Moxie when it evolves into Gyarados, and this is the better Ability in Single Battles, and Gyarados is a powerful Dynamax user with moves like Waterfall, Power Whip, Bounce, and Earthquake, it can use Dragon Dance to boost its Attack and Speed, but with Moxie, it can just Dynamax and use Max Airstream from Bounce to boost its own Speed, and gain Attack boosts through Moxie. Intimidate is better for Double Battles, and Gyarados is also a powerful Dynamax user there, as Max Airstream gives its side of the field a boost in Speed, making it a very powerful Pokémon to have on your team in battle.
Next is Meowth, this Pokémon is unviable in the competitive scene, its evolved form Persian has no reason to ever be used in online battles, it does get Technician and it can learn Fake Out, but there are way better options out there, if Ambipom was available in Sword & Shield, that thing would be used way more than Persian. If you are wondering about Gigantamax Meowth, that doesn't appear during the event, and Gigantamax Meowth is not even worth using, it is very weak, so it's not worth wasting your Dynamax on a Pokémon with very low stats. Its Hidden Ability is Unnerve, so it's there for Hidden Ability collectors.
Then we have Sudowoodo, and this one is at least decent, its Hidden Ability is Rattled, once again for Hidden Ability collectors, but not worth using. The good thing about Sudowoodo is Rock Head, it can learn moves like Head Smash and Wood Hammer and not take re-coil damage, and it can learn some other powerful moves like Hammer Arm, Earthquake, and Sucker Punch, so it does have good versatility, but it is outclassed by better Pokémon.
Then we have Darmanitan, and this one has a very gimmicky Hidden Ability, it has Zen Mode, and with this Darmanitan, its Zen Mode swaps its Attack and Special Attack stats, and gives it extra defensive stats in exchange for Speed, and it becomes part Psychic-type, it's not worth using. It has Sheer Force, which makes Darmanitan even more destructive in power, and it can learn moves like Flare Blitz and Rock Slide which work well with it, and Flare Blitz can deal massive damage, even Pokémon that resist Fire will get worn down by it. Darmanitan does have some nice coverage moves like Superpower, Earthquake, and U-turn, while it is a powerhouse, it is not good at taking hits, and its Speed isn't as high as some of the top tier Pokémon, so it usually has a Choice Scarf to try and outspeed some of those Pokémon.
