Old school platformers were some of the most fun games around. That is doubly true for old school shooters like Contra and the sort. It is a shame that such games aren't quite as popular as they used to be. This game though, Random Heroes, is a throw back to that glorious era of gaming and brings you some beautiful and beautifully fun platform gaming.

The "random" part in the title might make you think that this game is perhaps a roguelike, or something else with a randomized element to it. Instead, the game is platformer, in the style of Contra. And it's not just a cheap copy at that, it actually manages to add its own flare and style to the genre, making for a nice take on the old games.

The graphics are done in pixel art, but not exactly in the style of the older games. This game uses some modern effects, like transparencies, shaders, particle systems, etc... to achieve effects that wouldn't really have been doable on older systems. Still, nothing looks out of place, and everything works together very nicely. All of the sprites animate well, with the player controlled character and the bad guys all moving throughout the level and firing their weapons with their own little animations. Also of note is just how pretty the backgrounds look. The problem with some modern games in the genre is that they tend to go overboard with detail. This has just the right level of detail to present a beautiful game, while still keeping a clean aesthetic.

The sounds are also top notch, and while (like the graphics) they're not exactly the same as old school games, the inspiration is still clearly there but mixed in with modern effects. It's something like looking at the grandchild (or maybe great-grandchild, depending on how you're counting) of the older sound effects and music; the resemblance is clearly there, but the sounds in this game are still obviously its own.

If you've played an old platformer, then you should be pretty at home with this one. You move around with the left and right controls, shoot with another button, and jump with yet another. It's simple, but it can take some work to master it. Once you do though, a fun game with lots of shooting, jumping around, coin-collecting, etc... is open to you. It's not exactly as hard as older games (and definitely not Nintendo Hard, heaven forbid) but it still retains a level of challenge of its own. The game does start you off fairly easily enough, but things get more complicated and more challenging as things progress. Still, that difficulty does make for a great sense of achievement once you've gotten through things, so there's that.

So if you're looking to get your hands on some great old school platformer shooting action, then look no further! Go on and grab yourself a copy of Random Heroes, it's free, it's fun, and it's right at your finger tips!
