8-bit games are really popular these days. Probably has something to do with the feeling of nostalgia that they generate, something that's always popular especially considering how many of us old gamers are getting along in years and wanting to recapture the feeling of our youth. Unfortunately, this great influx of 8-bit old-school games has led to quite a few real stinkers that try to pass off terrible graphics with no actual style as being "retro" without making any attempt to capture the feel of those old games. Fortunately though, this game, Grounds Keeper 2 is not one of those games, and it's actually rather fun to play.
With a name like Grounds Keeper, it would seem that the game would be some sort of sim game, perhaps one where you manage an estate or something. Actually, it's a shooter, and while I suppose you do sort of manage the grounds, it's more in the form of blasting apart anything and everything that steps foot on said grounds. Still, it's great fun, so there's that.
The game is, as aforementioned, done in a retro pixel-art style. This isn't, however, the cheap halfhearted pixel art you see in other games, where there seems to be very little effort put into making things look good. In this game, the pixel art looks really spiffy, and could easily have been something you saw on a SNES or something similar from that era. The effects are, granted, a bit more modern than something from the SNES, but they jive well together and nothing feels forced. There's a great combination of the old school and the new school, making for a great aesthetic.
The sounds are not quite 8-bit, but they are obviously inspired by the 8-bit era, and the marriage of the old and new works, like the graphics, really well. You've got sounds for the shooting, the blasting, the exploding, and everything in between. The music too is pretty great, and is rather reminiscent of the best games from back in the day. Combine the great sound track with the great graphics, and you've got a game that not only looks great, but one that's a treat to the ears as well, and one that pulls at all the right heartstrings hearkening back to the days of 8-bit yore.
Where the game really shines though is the gameplay. It's fairly simple stuff, you run around and shoot everything that comes your way. Now while this may be a bit on the simple side, that doesn't mean that it's bad. The simplicity is great for the game, and it's that very simplicity that makes it work so well. It's not anywhere near Nintendo hard, but at times you just want a simple, relaxing game where you blast apart everything in sight with a vengeful fury instead of something that'll make you want to chuck your phone at the wall for making a mistake on a single jump.
Well, that just about sums it up for this review. If you're in the mood for some fun 8-bit shooting fun, then go on and grab yourself a free download of Grounds Keeper 2!
