The focus in this game is to control your character, Barry, and try to aim for the highest score. And you can do that by simply guiding him in the area and avoid the obstacles along the ways. Some of these obstacles are lasers and bullets. Collect as many coins as you can so you can purchase new jetpacks in The Stash. Although many may look down on them as being simple games for simple casuals, the truth is that there's no denying just how fun endless running games can be. They're simple, they're easy to get into, but they're still a whole lot of fun. That said, with the sheer number of these on the market right now, it can be a of a challenge to find something that offers something new. Enter Jetpack Joyride, which offers a whole lot of new stuff to the genre, making it possibly one of the most enjoyable endless runners around today.
Most endless runners have you... well, -running- around from point A to point B, with the entirety of variation being in the level design. Sure, some mix things up by maybe changing things from -running- to something like -flying- around, but they're pretty much all the same. This game however, really mixes things up a lot by giving you a whole bunch of different things to run around in aside from the eponymous jetpack.
The graphics in the game are mostly cartoony sprites, but they are very well done cartoony sprites. They work well with the overall theme and feel of the game, looking silly and quirky, but providing the atmosphere and aesthetic needed. Each sprite animates nicely, from the moving around to the getting blown up or zapped away. What's more, with the sheer number of different things to move around in available to you, there's a whole smorgasbord of different player character graphics for you to feast your eyes on.
The visuals work well with the audio, as both go hand in hand to provide a great atmosphere for the game. The sounds are just as professionally done as the graphics, and just about everything has its own sound effect. What's more, the music is rather catchy, and puts one in the perfect mood and frame of mind to deal with the fast pace and frenetic action of the game.
As with most endless running games, you're tasked with getting from one point of the level to the other. What's different though, is that although you start out with a jetpack (which you control similarly to Flappy Bird) you eventually move on to other rides like motorcycles, teleportation pods, and even ginormous mecha through powerups or through unlocking them. Each ride that you unlock still requires you to do the getting from one point to the other bit, but each one handles differently from the next making it so you have a rather unique experience with each. With each of the different rides, you also have different abilities, so it's not just a graphical switch. With the jetpack, you fly around and shoot things with the jetstream. With the mecha, you can wade through most everything but are susceptible to missile fire which you have to block. with the teleporation pod, you swipe across the screen to go to different places. And so on and so forth. All excellent fun.
