Hey, remember the days when you would muck about during recess playing with your Game Boy instead of revising for that test coming up the following period? Yeah, those games were pretty darn good. There aren't really that many games around like that these days, where the gameplay is at the forefront, with simple but addictive mechanics making for a really fun game. Enter Stardash, which will bring back exactly that feeling of Game Boy fun.

The name Stardash might make you think it's some sort of endless runner, what with the "dash" in the name. Actually, the game is more in line with something like the Super Mario games, and the graphics are very clearly evocative of the design aesthetic of those games. Similarly, the gameplay is a whole lot like those the Mario games. But we're getting ahead of ourselves, let's take a closer look at how the game looks, shall we?

The game is done all in grayscale, something that would initially seem an odd choice what with the processing power available on devices these days. Rather than feeling strange though, it actually feels rather natural, as if you were really playing a game on an old Game Boy. Now, purists out there may say that it's not -exactly- the same as the Game Boy palette, but for just about everyone else, it looks pretty spot on. You've also got the same minimalist animations that, while being rather subtle, add a whole lot of life and vibrancy to the game.

The music also seems to hail from the 8-bit era, with the same 8-bit-y sounds and music. The music is catchy and sets a great atmosphere for the rest of the game, and it does this so well you'd almost think it really was straight out of an old 8-bit game. The sound effects are the typical stuff you'd expect from a platformer, with sounds for jumping, landing, etc... All of these sound effects and the soundtrack mesh together rather with the graphics, really giving you the feel that you're some time back in the late 80s or early 90s, a kid again huddled over a black and white screen.

As for gameplay, it might not be quite as hard as any of the old Mario games, but that's perhaps a good thing as you won't be tempted to chuck your phone at the wall after missing that one jump. It's certainly a whole lot easier, but there's still that element of challenge that you get with those old Game Boy platformers. The game does get more challenging down the road though, so no need to worry about this one being another one of those hold-your-hand type games that seem to be so prevalent these days.

And that wraps it up for Stardash. No need to grab your old Game Boy (thought that might be a good idea nonetheless) if you want to experience some great retro gaming. Go on and grab yourself a free copy of Stardash now, it's great old school fun!
