SGC18: Amanda Warner - Fake It To Make It: A Game Design Study
Fake It To Make It (https://www.fakeittomakeitgame.com/) is a simulation-style game where players create fake news.
This game is a response to the growing amount of politically-charged misinformation being shared on social media. Players learn how and why fake news is distributed, and explore how political tribalism, fear, and anger can be amplified and exploited by third parties for their own gain.
Using the game as a concrete example, this session will explore game design for real-world impact. Participants will learn about visually mapping desired real-world outcomes, integrating those outcomes into gameplay, and using challenge to motivate players to learn.
About Amanda Warner:
Amanda Warner designs and develops games, learning, and other experiences that focus on real-world change. She recently launched Fake It To Make It, a social-impact game about how fake news is created and distributed, and PostFacto, a game about fact checking. Amanda has designed interactive learning for the past fifteen years, initially in the corporate sector, and now in collaboration with NGOs. Most of her recent work has targeted digital literacy, medical care, and disaster response. She is working on a new game about dark money in politics.
