#SuperOldGameSaturday - Space Channel 5 (Dreamcast)

Just like how in 2021 we followed up a Midway collection with the debut of a then new guest on #SuperOldGameSaturday with a Sega game, we did it again for 2022 and this time, we went through an incredibly infectious music rhythm game on the 22nd anniversary of its release in the United States. TheCrochetNerd64 made his long-awaited debut on the program with the unabashed strangeness, retro-stylings and outstanding music of Space Channel 5 for the Dreamcast which, like me, marked his early exposure to music rhythm games (and this was actually my first) and the escapades of 2499 space reporter Ulala covering an alien invasion where the aliens' victims are hit with laser beams that force them to dance are still something that makes us giddy (and despite the presence of Mexican Flyer by Ken Woodman and his Piccadilly Brass, did NOT result in copyrights concerns). As such, we gave this Dreamcast staple from producer Tetsuya Mizuguchi the full play, which included all the game's reports (including some amazing shows of skill from TheCrochetNerd64), all of the extra paths after we finished the game and all of the character profiles, the latter of which revealed a deeper lore to this game than either myself or my guest realized. We also seemed to entertain the active chat with our play and discussion of this game, where we went through our memories of this game, the Dreamcast (as this is certainly a game that epitomizes just how varied and exciting much of its library is), our experience with music games (including some that the chat wanted to see us play), the 60s influences, themes and stylings of this game and many other random aspects (from the Iron Man Animated Series, to Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, to Coco Chanel, to Yazoo, to the Teletubbies and more) that all fit together and made for a terrific and unique experience with this game. I once again thank TheCrochetNerd64 for joining our show and adding so much to his first (but given that he'll be on the show at least once a month for almost a year, certainly not last) appearance, as well as all of you in the chat who joined us (or are watching this show now) and made this such a great episode (though keep in mind the flashing lights on Report 3).
