#SuperOldGameSaturday - Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (Game Boy)
Originally Recorded/Aired on June 25th, 2022
Last November, we played Super Mario Land for the Game Boy and, on the request of ElecVerse, we at #SuperOldGameSaturday are playing the next portable entry in the Mario series, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year (though there were technical problems on this video that I'm sorry about and will try to prevent with future shows as much as possible). Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins was the 1992 sequel to Super Mario Land and, along with this Game Boy staple marking the debut of Wario to the Mario enterprise, it's also a uniquely open Mario game, in that it lets you play through any of its main worlds in any order you want. As such, we took the Shadow the Hedgehog approach with this one, as chat decided the order of the worlds we played as we took Mario through Mario Land to get the 6 golden coins to open and reclaim his stolen castle from Wario, who took it while we were out in Sarasaland in the last game. We had a terrific time going into our memories and insights about this one as we played through every level and found all 32 secret exits, specifically how great looking and sounding a game this is (especially the great and cheery music by Kazumi Totaka (including the first appearance of Totaka's Song on this show), how strongly it shows of the capabilities of the Game Boy, how it reflects what portable gaming was like in the 90s and many other topics as varied as the strange enemies in this (even by Mario standards), The Looney Tunes Show, I Am Weasel, the Super Mario Adventures comic that's tied to this game (namely, the Mario & Wario story), the recently released Sonic Origins collection and much more. That, and this play gives us more portable gaming representation on this show, which is always welcome, and it let us fulfill another viewer request, which I and the chat love doing, so thank you ElecVerse for asking to see this one and, to everyone, we do at least one viewer request a month, so let us know in the comments below (or in the chat when we do the shows live) what you want to see and we'll get to them. Hope you enjoy our play of Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (and if you like what you see here, stop by https://www.twitch.tv/captainditrag each Saturday at 7 PM EST to see these streams live and join/help drive the conversations on what we play each week)!
