#SuperOldGameSaturday - Wario's Woods (Super Nintendo & NES)
Originally Recorded/Aired on Friday, May 6th, 2022
So, #SuperOldGameSaturday had another Friday show this time, but hey; it lets us keep this program happening every week (more or less) and this time, we played another viewer request in the form of a 1994 puzzle game that tends not to be remembered but, as we showed, it deserves more attention. It's Wario's Woods, co-developed by Nintendo R&D1 and Intelligent Systems, for the NES and Super Nintendo and though we did show both versions of this one off for this stream, most of our attention was paid to the never re-released 16-bit edition (which may be because the SNES version never physically released in Japan or maybe because of... something else). ElecVerse asked to see this on Super Nintendo, where it has an exclusive Vs. Computer mode and voice-overs to accompany Toad on his quest to save the forest from , and as someone who only played the NES version extensively before this show, I think this version enhanced my appreciation of this game even more, as well as my respect for people who are really good at it, of which in the chat, we had not only ElecVerse, but ElecVerse's mother, for whom this is a favorite puzzle game (and fitting that this was the show for Mother's Day weekend). As such, a good amount of our discussion was about some of our personal puzzle games of expertise, discussion on difficulty/complexity in the genre and basically what makes a great puzzle game for us in terms of mechanics, atmosphere, story and if/how they incentivize your mastery and continued play of them, even when, as you'll see at points here, it kicks your ass (which makes victory all the more satisfying, be it against the computer or your friends/family). I think our play of Wario's Woods shows how good and underrated a puzzle game it is and we had a great time going through this (even when we were all really quiet later in the game), as well as having a bit more to enjoy with a brief look at the NES edition via Animal Crossing on the Gamecube, and I thank all of you for making such a special show, even with it being on a Friday (and just to confirm this, our next program will be on a Saturday). Hope you enjoy our play of Wario's Woods (and if you like what you see here, stop by https://www.twitch.tv/captainditrag each Saturday at 7 PM EST to see these streams live and join/help drive the conversations on what we play each week)!
