We have arrived at our final show of 2024 here on #SuperOldGameSaturday and to cap off our 4th year of classic gaming goodness, we are beginning our play of a game that means so much to me and one that I've wanted to share with you all since I first began this program. It is Shenmue, the 1999/2000 open-world adventure mystery game from Sega and AM2 for the Dreamcast, which tells the story of Ryo Hazuki, a young man in 1986 Japan whose father is killed by a man named Lan Di who heads off seeking answers and revenge for his father. The passion project of co-designer/co-director/co-producer Yu Suzuki was an early example to me of video games with a cinematic flair and one I attached to very strongly back in its day and still adore 25 years later and, for Part 1 of my long-anticipated play of this game, DollyFinn and the best chat on Twitch joined me as we searched for the black car carrying Lan Di, learned about Chinese people/culture, began our search for sailors and, in between those story beats, go gambling, buy capsule toys, play darts and other arcade games, raise a local kitten and much more. Oh, and before we began the show, I introduced you to the Official Dreamcast Magazine demo disc video of this game that gave me my first look at Shenmue to let you understand just how much this game means to me as I shared all of my memories of this, along with those from DollyFinn and the chat. It's also been a bit of time that I took off before getting this edit done, to the point where Part 2 of this game will be in only two days from now on January 10th, 2025, but I'm glad to be back with our final show of last year and thank DollyFinn, chat and all of you for another great year of our independent gaming stream as we get ready for another great year to come in 2025.
