#SuperOldGameSaturday - Donkey Kong Country Portable Port Showcase (Game Boy Color/Game Boy Advance)

I, Captain DiTrag, am a huge fan of the Donkey Kong Country franchise, which started this month 30 years ago on the Super Nintendo, thanks to publisher Nintendo and developer Rareware. So here on #SuperOldGameSaturday, to celebrate this occasion and after having played the original 16-bit trilogy on the show before, we're taking a look at the portable ports of these classic 2D platformers in this showcase program. For this, we took a look at 2000's Donkey Kong Country for Game Boy Color and then, the 2003, 2004 and 2005, respectively, Game Boy Advance versions of Donkey Kong Country 1, 2 and 3 (as played with the Game Boy Player on Gamecube). Far from just being the Super Nintendo versions again, each of these have their own extras and unique interpretations that make them worth a look and your attention (and perhaps a Nintendo Switch Online release in the future; hint hint). So, myself and the best chat on Twitch (including new and familiar faces) went deep into all 4 of these games and all of the differences we could, all while discussing our memories of this series, these games, our favorite Donkey Kong characters, other games of Rare's and the legacy of Donkey Kong Country at 30 years. I also went into a long overdue explanation on my personal boycott of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom/how we'd square that for the show (and I must admit, I got a bit heated in my reaction to past guests' reactions to it, and I apologize for that), along with, on the suggestion of our great chat, showing what happens when you play one of these games with the DK Bongos accessory and going into the psychology of getting deep into a game like this, particularly when it gets difficult, and what it feels like to persevere. We had a great time celebrating this big anniversary of "the banana slamma" and we will return for the other Donkey Kong Country and connected games in the future.
