Looks like the Halloween 2018 marathon doesn't have to end with a whimper, after all. This is Total Chaos with OpenAL Soft's HRTF. You might not realize this at first glance, but Total Chaos is in fact a Doom engine Survival Horror game running on the GZDoom source port. It was created by Wadaholic over the course of 6 years and it can be played as a mod or as a standalone Total Conversion using Freedoom. This video was just a quickie since I just discovered this mod only a couple hours ago, but I felt it was perfect to cap off the month with.
Unfortunately, I couldn't record any more than this footage you see here. For some reason, OBS Studio does not want to record the audio for this game correctly. I can record a smooth 60FPS even at 1080p, but the audio starts skipping uncontrollably in the next room after the footage. I guess I can leave it up to someone else to record Total Chaos for the time being. I've only played the first chapter so far, but I have a feeling that this game is going to become a cult classic of the Horror game genre that will be spoken of for years to come, like Underhell.
Strangely, I had to replace the old openal32.dll in the directory with a newer 1.19.2 to get 3D sound. The 3D positional audio in GZDoom is decent overall, though obviously there's no vertical HRTF since it's a 2.5D engine. I've always wondered how a GZDoom mod would sound like with monsters that use realistic footsteps. It's a bit tougher to gauge the distance of enemies compared to say, ioquake3, but I assume that's another 2.5D engine limitation since Outlaws had a similar problem.
