The Ultimate Doom w/ 3D spatial sound 🎧 (OpenAL Soft HRTF audio) E4M6
Use headphones only with any virtual surround features turned off. Best HRTF effect at 5:21. I'm playing this with Per Kristian's hi-def soundpack as well as MarphitimusBlackimus's Doom 2 Minor Sprite Fixing Project v1.9 for better-than-vanilla gameplay. Sorry about the filtering; it was for video playback, I swear.
This is The Ultimate Doom's E4M6 with OpenAL Soft's HRTF in GZDoom. In recent years, Episode 4 has come under a lot of flack from the Doom community and critics like Gggmanlives. I didn't get this at first because when I was a teenager, I used to think E4 had some of the best official maps. Looking at it now, yeah, it fucking sucks. Some of the maps like E4M3 and E4M4 come across as user maps ripped straight from a random BBS. I still think E4M7 is an interesting map, but that's only because it's technically part of Dr. Sleep's "Dante's Inferno" episode along with his Master Levels.
...And then there's John Romero's maps. Wow. A decade ago, people used to praise the shit out of these two levels. Doomers really thought that E4M2 being made in 6 hours was something to be proud of. It's been years since I've played these, but I don't think a single person playtested them in retrospect. I think Romero was so full of himself after his rise to fame that he didn't even think they needed playtesting. They were perfect simply because they were his own maps. In reality, they're unfair, plodding messes that are mostly spent killing tons of bullet sponges in corridors you can't strafe in. If you don't play the level in the specific order that Romero intended, then the lava floors kill you.
Fun fact: I was originally going to do E4M2 but I gave up when I realized no one would want to watch me pixelsnipe the edges of the Barons' hitboxes for 20 minutes.
