Doom II: Hell on Earth w/ 3D spatial sound in GZDoom 🎧 (OpenAL Soft HRTF audio)
Use headphones only with any virtual surround features turned off. Best HRTF effect at 0:18. I'm playing this with Per Kristian's hi-def soundpack as well as MarphitimusBlackimus's Doom 2 Minor Sprite Fixing Project v1.9 for better-than-vanilla gameplay. Sorry about the filtering; it was for video playback, I swear.
Doom II in GZDoom was the game that made me discover the magic of HRTF. I first learned the term in an older ZDoom build where FMOD was used for a fake low-pass filtered "HRTF", but I didn't get my first taste of it until CSGO added it. I used to hate HRTF because I thought it made CSGO muffled, and things only got worse when GZDoom 3.0.0 removed FMOD. All of a sudden, Doom II sounded like shit and all the bass from the SSG was missing.
After Googling this new "OpenAL Soft", I came across a particular Reddit post (linked below) by u/HathNoro that described how to set up "customized HRTFs". It took me at least 3 hours of experimenting with random bursts of static noise (seriously, do not overlook the waves video I recorded), but I knew it would all be worth it in the end if it made Doom sound good again. Once I narrowed the options down to IRC_1020 (boy, does that feel long ago), I launched Doom II MAP18 with IDDQD to hear the results.
It was truly a life-changing experience comparable to a near-sighted person putting on glasses for the very first time. I could hear the sounds of Doom in 3D! It was as if I could actually feel the Imps scratching and the Pinkies biting all around me! After testing, I found a forum for "The Dark Mod" and came across a video of "Aureal A3D Rooms" by Hiradur. Once I heard just how beautiful and convincing the sound was on both headphones and speakers, I knew then and there that HRTF was the untapped potential that mainstream gaming had been missing for the longest time.

I might not always approve of your online behavior or the often questionable decisions behind your source port, but I would've never started this video series had you not thrown out FMOD Ex for an LGPL alternative. More importantly, thank you Hiradur. All the content on your channel might be gone forever, but the memories of those Aureal A3D videos will remain with me for the rest of my life.
