Up next is Penumbra: Black Plague with OpenAL Soft's HRTF. Unlike the first game, you need to rename the 32-bit soft_oal.dll to "OpenAL32.dll" and overwrite the one in C:\Windows\SysWOW64. I feel like Black Plague was a huge disappointment compared to Overture. The gameplay was dumbed-down in every single aspect and it wasn't even scary except for the 2 jumpscares. Whose idea was it to have some wisecracking Brooklyn guy comment over the game, anyway?
The binaural audio is just as good as in Overture, thankfully, but it has the notable addition of EFX reverb. The most glaring omission from the first game was the lack of echoey reverb through the tunnels, so I'm glad they remembered to include it this time. There's more ambient sounds than in the first game so you can hear the HRTF more clearly this time. Black Plague also seems to use some mild occlusion effects, although they seem to be glitchy and don't work with some sounds like electrical sparks.
