Ubuntu 15.04 VS Windows 8.1 : Counter Strike Global Offensive Benchmark with an AMD HD5750
A short video checking out the recent update to Counter Strike Global Offensive for Linux, this time pitching it on AMD graphics both natively on Ubuntu and Windows!
After covering Intel and Nvidia, what about AMD? Does the recent CSGO performance update in Dec help us Linux gamers here?
On both Ubuntu and Windows I am using the same Catalyst Omega drivers. These were the latest drivers I could get at the time of recording.
I wanted to include the Open Source Radeon driver as well, but I was unable to start Steam up due to an unresolvable X error.
Overall, AMD's Catalyst driver is improving for Linux. It has OpenGL 4 support and it actually reaches quite close to the Windows driver performance.
When you notice the Windows frames starting to increase dramatically, you'll also notice that detail on the Windows side disappears. Blood splatters and bullet holes are gone, but the Linux side has them.
This provides Windows and the AMD Windows driver an unfair advantage since it's less taxed. It also means Windows users are getting less on their screens when they should be getting more.
This benchmark was in between my experience with Nvidia and Intel. It's not as good as Nvidia yet, but it's far better than Intel's situation.
I believe AMD may actually catch up this year if they keep improving the driver's performance.
All in all, I'd say the AMD experience is not as good as it can be. It would still be more recommendable to run games on Linux via Nvidia, but AMD have a chance to turn this around if they keep improving like they are.
I also note that my results are based solely on my hardware, and in no way can truly cover an entire group of hardware much more users of an entire operating system platform of. There are bound to be differences between my experience and yours. This should paint a general picture though.
I apologize in advance if I've made any mistakes, I did the comparison to the best of my knowledge and hopefully have a consistent set of constants and variables in place to ensure this test is beneficial to you, the viewer.
