Ubuntu 14.10 VS Windows 8.1 : Counter Strike Global Offensive Benchmark with a GTX 680
A short video checking out the recent update to Counter Strike Global Offensive for Linux. I'm running it on both Ubuntu and Windows, both natively!
It would seem that the tables have turned since I last benchmarked CS GO.
On Ubuntu, I am using the Nvidia 346.35 drivers.
On Windows, I am using the Nvidia 347.25 drivers.
These were the closest I could get the drivers at the time of this recording, they were also the latest.
Whilst both platforms were well above 120 fps, there was a single dip on Ubuntu down to 99 and a single serious dip on Windows down to 67. So, these small annoyances could bother 120Hz monitor users.
This benchmark was a surprise to me. Whilst recording, I didn't notice the differences. It was only once I put them side-by-side, that the numbers were impressive.
It would seem that the Windows version of the game may need patching or a fix or the Windows driver, as the missing/less blood splatters and bullet holes are a pretty glaring difference.
All in all, I highly recommend this title for purchase if you are a Linux gamer who is into First Person Shooters, and love some instant action (who also happens to game on Nvidia hardware).
I wonder if we will continue to see such performance optimizations going into the future?
Please note that AMD/ATi and Intel graphics users may experience vastly different results.
I also note that my results are based solely on my hardware, and in no way can truly cover an entire group of hardware much more users of an entire operating system platform of. There are bound to be differences between my experience and yours. This should paint a general picture though.
I apologize in advance if I've made any mistakes, I did the comparison to the best of my knowledge and hopefully have a consistent set of constants and variables in place to ensure this test is beneficial to you, the viewer.
