A short video checking out the recent update to Counter Strike Global Offensive for Linux, this time pitching it on Intel graphics both natively on Ubuntu and Windows!

How does the current Intel Linux driver fare against it's own Windows driver? Does the recent CSGO performance update in Dec help us Linux gamers here?

On Ubuntu, I am using the open source Mesa 10.5.0-devel drivers.
On Windows, I am using the Intel proprietary 15.33.30 drivers.
These were the latest drivers I could get at the time of recording.

After a year since I last benchmarked my Intel hardware, it would seem we have not gotten much further.

Intel's Linux driver performs abysmally compared to Intel's own Windows driver.

On the Windows side, it's able to maintain a good 60 fps and upwards, on Ubuntu the Intel driver barely hangs on and always dips to below 20fps.

This benchmark was a very depressing reality check for me, as it's pretty clear that Intel aren't upping their Linux game at all.

The Intel Windows driver not only outperforms the Intel Linux driver at every frame, it also has full OpenGL 4 support.

All in all, I cannot recommend playing games on this Intel iGPU on Linux until Intel actually starts fixing it professionally.

I wonder if we will continue to see such low performance going into the future?

This benchmark really is in stark contrast to the Nvidia driver.

I also note that my results are based solely on my hardware, and in no way can truly cover an entire group of hardware much more users of an entire operating system platform of. There are bound to be differences between my experience and yours. This should paint a general picture though.

I apologize in advance if I've made any mistakes, I did the comparison to the best of my knowledge and hopefully have a consistent set of constants and variables in place to ensure this test is beneficial to you, the viewer.
