Ultima IX - Tidbits #46: Rescue Shamino in the wrong way
Using the shield bash, you can push stationary NPCs away.
If you do this to Shamino just before using the three artefacts, they won't work in the room where the scene is intended to happen, but they do at Shamino's new position. This means the Bell of Courage and the others work depending on their position relative to the Well of Souls NPC model of Shamino (which is probably different than what we see in LB's castle later.)
The scene goes exactly as it should and though the Malchier part is missing here, it was always present in all my off-camera experiments: the camera panned to the room, but the ghost was not visible there.
Walking to the other end of the Well of Souls before entering OM also doesn't change anything, just the camera needs to pan between three places.
Leaving to Skara Brae while the OM dialog is open and hitting enter there makes it so that upon returning, one needs to interact with Shamino manually to start the scene.
So, not even inter-map shenanigans cause crashes here.
NOTE:
The shield bash is surely useful for other fun like this, but changing the position of an NPC doesn't always alter anything. Like doing this to Blackthorn in the Abyss makes the scene go the same, even with spells targeted at the same spot, yet he still dies. That scene is really fixed.
