At 0:48 I manage to get one enemy to kill another, which is a fairly rare feat to pull off in Vagrant Story when not actively trying.
A long but relatively simple segment. Here I go back and complete the other forked path that leads to the Sky Dragon. I have the Iron Key now, so once I get back to Bandit's Hollow (i.e. the worst room in the game) I can grab the chest there (19:48).
This allows me to pick up two crucial items on this path: 11:25 the Undine Bracelet and 21:06 Spark Fusion. These are inevitably important for Marid in the final dungeon, but will first be a big help on the Water Elemental who guards the entrance to Limestone Quarry.
15:39 As you can see here, Bandit's Hollow is infinitely easier when you approach it from this path, because you can easily get to the Heal Panel without running any risk of triggering the Trap Clear. I would say under normal circumstances this--plus the general awfulness of Abandoned Mines B2--clearly proves that taking the Dark Elemental path is the far superior route. It also includes a chest containing Sweet Death, an upgrade over the Soul Kiss in normal runs. Unfortunately, as I mentioned previously this means you need to have a method to deal with the Sky Dragon. In this particular challenge run, that wasn't manageable without the Affinity.
8:20 That said, coming back to the Dark Elemental after you have Psychodrain (found right after the lich who teaches Teleport, in the same chest as the Iron Key) is hugely helpful, since you have no other way to reduce his dark damage. Having a Light/Blunt weapon is an even bigger help, as otherwise his defenses are quite potent. Having both here, I absolutely cream him.
21:05 This Pirate's Mate chest also contains a critical item for my run. The Iron Heater Shield here will be one of two shields I'll eventually use against the game's final boss, as it's one of the game's strongest physical defense shields, with two gem slots, 25 Piercing and 10 Evil defense.
