Lots to cover in this one.
First, I backtrack to make my first Scorpion. Unfortunately at this point in the game I now have 4 Spears, and only 3 hilts. That means I cant make a full Piercing/Edged/Blunt/Light set, which is my preferred setup.
Instead, I merge my Light and Blunt weapons into one, the Shiny Hammer. This has a couple of advantages. Most of the enemies I'll be coming upon who are weak to light are equally weak to Blunt and Piercing. I do lose some minor damage on Quicksilvers, but that shouldn't hurt me much. Even so, much of that is offset by my hilt going from giving me 1 Piercing, to 11 Blunt.
Later, I'll convert this weapon back to Piercing with other combinations. I couldn't roll this Scorpion into my Pole Axe (the next Blunt Polearm) anyway, so there's no permanent loss here.
3:03 The humans here are a bit of a hassle in my current setup. They're ideally weak to a good Piercing Physical weapon, but I don't have one of those. If I hadn't converted my Slashy Nail to Earth already, I could have made do with a Physical Slashy Nail and Physical Scorpion... except I converted my Scorpion to Light because I didn't have enough hilts. So that's a double whammy.
Instead I go with using a Salamander Ruby to turn the Slashy Nail fire. That's enough to kill three of the humans here. On the remaining, I use Stormy. Two of the enemies are still pretty resistant to my attacks, so I supplement with Degenerate. I wind up with full MP before the next fight anyway.
5:10 I take the Abandoned Mines B2 route for this part of the game because the Affinity is a major upgrade at this juncture, and the best method to kill the Sky Dragon (who's actually quite hard) in these minimalist runs. I'm going to wind up taking both routes anyway, since I need both the Affinity and the Undine Bracelet. Better to first take the route that gives me an advantage on the boss.
I wanted to point out at this juncture that I could defeat the Dark Elemental if I was so inclined. He's weak to Light and Blunt, and this is one of the few challenge runs I've done where I happen to actually have a Light/Blunt weapon, which hits him for about 50 damage a hit. This would allow me to grab the Sweet Death chest early. However I don't think there's anything particularly useful in there for me right now, and I still cannot find a way to defeat the Sky Dragon with my current arsenal without Affinity.
6:30 Finally, once I enter the Abandoned Mines B2, my Edged weapon being Earth pays dividends again. It allows me to kill basic Orcs without casting, and gives a minor damage boost for the 9:00 Air Elemental (although Soil Fusion would've been enough for him regardless). I need the Sylphid Ring to take the heat off of his Thunderburst. This will become my standard strategy for elementals at this point, since I can't muster up any other defense against their Evocations.
