Released 6/21/1985, Spartan X for Famicom is a port of the Irem arcade classic of the same name. Many people know this game as "Kung-Fu Master" in arcades and "Kung Fu" on the NES. These are the versions that did not have a license to use the movie name, basically anywhere outside of Japan. Other than the title screen, they are all virtually identical.

Before going into the weird movie this game is based on, let me first talk about the gameplay. This is considered the first brawler and also an inspiration for the developer, Nishiyama, to create similar boss battles in Street Fighter for Capcom. Miyamoto chose to work on the port to the Famicom, and the side-scrolling action would influence his work on Super Mario Bros. The controls are a bit awkward, but still good, and the music is great for an early Famicom title.

Now, about the odd choice to use this movie as a basis for a video game. At first glance, it makes sense. Wheels on Meals is a Jackie Chan film that had its name changed to Spartan X in Japan. Chan plays Thomas, a food truck operator trying to save a girl named Sylvia. She has been kidnapped by a criminal organization led by a man named Mr. X (he uses a Zoro-esque technique to mark his victims by sword). There are lots of great action sequences showing off Chan's talent, so it fits for a beat 'em up game. However, Sylvia at one point reveals she is a former child prostitute who now poses as a hooker to pickpocket men. This is like choosing Pulp Fiction as the basis for a kids video game! What were they thinking?!

Greek Spartan themes are totally absent in the movie. I truly have no idea why "Spartan" was chosen as part of the name. The only connection in the game I see is the child fighters may be alluding to ancient Sparta's combat training for youngsters. Nishiyama liked the idea and created a spiritual successor to this game that kept the Greek city-state theme, i.e. Trojan.

I am considering a playthrough to be beating each floor and boss. I played on an original NES with a Game Genie adapter (see Shorts) to allow for playing a Famicom cartridge. I am using a NES Advantage controller, RCA cables, and a Sharp X-Flat 27" CRT TV. The blue shade in this game is very difficult to film without flicker!
