Previously, after going through the Animus for the first time, Desmond learns the identity of his two captors: Warren and Lucy Stillman. Moving forward to the next day, Desmond is forced back into the Animus, reliving the life of Altaïr once again. The assassin is shocked to see that he is still alive and that Al Mualim has given him a second chance to redeem himself. However, Altaïr is stripped of his possession and ranking, reducing him to a mere novice. Despite his protest falling on deaf ears, Altaïr begrudgingly accepts reality and attempts to work his way up to restore his rank.
Al Mualim gives him his first task: to murder a traitor. It seems like someone within the Assassin Brotherhood has betrayed the organization, thus leading to the attack by Robert de Sablé. In order to track down the traitor, Altaïr must gather all possible pieces of information, and link them to one person. First, it came from eavesdropping on a conversation, and then it was pickpocketing a satchel from a trader. Finally, he had come face to face with the traitor, forcing him to admit his allegiance to the Templars as he was interrogated by Altaïr.
Once bringing forth the traitor to Al Mualim, the old mentor slays the traitor, rewards Altaïr his first rank, and bestows him a sword to use as a weapon. Now the real work can begin, as Al Mualim orders Altaïr to kill nine men, the first target being Tamir, located in Damascus.
