Breath of Fire (GBA) Playthrough Part 19 - Emperor Zog
Definitely the main highlight of this video is...
...
*drum roll*
...
The item description that reads "It Broken."... SERIOUSLY! WHAT KIND OF QA or TRANSLATOR missed this?! The original SNES had it correct "It is broken". This still does not exonerate EITHER port from having non-existent item descriptions though. To a lesser degree, part of Ox's dialogue during Ryu and Sara's brief reunion is cut off on the border of the text window, when there really is no reason it has to, since the bottom portion of the text window can clearly accommodate at least 3 more chars. Terrible. Simply awful text, dialogue and description designs.
Anyways, having finally reached the Dark Dragon's Domain after a lengthy and perilous journey. You cannot actually confront Emperor Zog just yet, there is a few things that bar entry. The first being to fix the elevator (why doesn't any of the Dark Dragons take the initiative?) which requires a trip back to Spring and then Gant. Then, before you can even enter any further, the mysterious stranger bars you from continuing to Zog until you obtain a Dragon Heart (D. Hrt) weapon from Tunlan, which is actually a song. Usable only once in battle where any dragons (including Ryu) will suffer severe damage.
WITH ALL SAID AND DONE at last, what a pain...
Finally we can traverse into Zog's Tower in Scande. Being a climatic dungeon, why not record the entire traversal; however, I found it disappointing that there are LITERALLY so few actual Dark Dragons roaming around in their own domain, worst yet is the complete lack of any in Zog's Tower guarding him. The first floor has absolutely no encounters and good thing because it is the biggest and widest area in the Tower. The floor switches are a red herring, you can easily get all the chests on the second floor without ever having to flip one. I would've preferred more for such an important dungeon, but oh well... There are quite a bit of healing fountains, strangely enough. I found it disappointing that BowmanX and LancerX posses give significantly less than their weaker Archer and Spearman posses; then again... BlazeX was such a HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS and clearly gave less than a Blaze enemy.
BOSS: Zog [17:14]
Finally a battle with an ACTUAL Dragon... no seriously, up to this point Ryu and crew have NEVER faced an actual dragon, not even during any of the Dragon Shrine trials and despite the fact that they are at war against the DARK DRAGONS. Anyways, this is without a doubt my most favorite battle in the entire game, the music sounds epic AND Zog looks freaking awesome (and appropriately menacing if not more). Some things to prepare for is to change Karn into Puka-Karn, Ryu go transform into Rudra (or Agni if you are REALLY concerned, but remember to revert Karn back to normal before doing so). Have Nina strengthen the party's defense using FortX to fend off Zog's physical attacks and increase Puka-Karn's physical attacks as well. Zog will frequently employ party hitting spells and attacks, but while they are damaging, they shouldn't inflict too much unless you are very underleveled. Bleu's BoltX inflicts the most damage and is debately the most useful spell in her entire arsenal, especially for boss battles since each time it is casted, it inflicts an instant 400HP to a single target. In this case however, as is Ryu's Rudra power, it inflicts 150% damage instead. Nina should remain the dedicated healer unless it is safe for her to pelt Zog as well. His second wind phase lasts for some time, but your continued assault should dominate him in no time, completely overpowering the amount of damage Agni does per turn. You don't need to ever use Dragon Heart on this guy... because there is a much more worthy recipient of this tune later on. I remember this guy using instant death spells back in the SNES version, though I admit it has been a while since I've played that one, I do remember experiencing A LOT more trouble during this battle than I did now.
I didn't expect Bleu to deal the fatal blow to Zog, I was hoping Rudra (Ryu) would've... And thus, unfortunately ends the most epic battle in the game... sigh... The emperor goes down gracefully surprisingly and even commends Ryu, urging him to rebuild the world for the sake of the Dragon Clans. For a power-hungry character, he does have some nobility in him. Is it just me or does Zog's helmet look a lot like Kain's from Final Fantasy 4?
The reunion with Sara was too predictable. One plot hole that is never explained at this cutscene is when Sara opened the treasure chest that housed what is clearly ANOTHER Goddess Key, but it was CLEARLY established at the start that there were ONLY 6 Goddess Keys and Ryu's group has them ALL in hand. So where in the HELL did this 7th one come from?!
The kidnapped Dirt Digging moles I don't think I recall them ever being mentioned back in Gramor... but at least we rescued them, I guess...
