Breath of Fire (GBA) Playthrough Part 22 - Obelisk
Obelisk isn't as foreboding as everyone in the game makes it out to be. It's by no means a long dungeon when compared to earlier ones. The monster variants stretch from the ones back in Gust to the amazingly annoying BlazeX. Apparently Cerl didn't manage to take Goda down with her during their struggle. Guess it is up to Ryu and co. to avenge her and Alan.
BOSS: Goda [1:29]
This guy only ever attacks... one target each turn, so he is by no means a threat. He doesn't even score criticals. Conserve your magic for the upcoming obstacles because this guy ain't worth spending on. His second wind, won't last too long and he doesn't grow any stronger. Doof-Ox never really got a chance to battle so why not let him; after-all it looks a lot like a minotaur taking down a brick wall. This guy looks like a Golem enemy from Dragon Quest.
After facing Goda, Ryu and crew come face-to-face with 4 different paths, all... which lead to the exact same destination and ROOMS. So WHY exactly was there a need for THIS? The developers either got lazy and/ or thought they were being clever.
Jade offers Ryu and his comrades the chance to join him, and unlike other RPG's where accepting such an offer results in a premature game over, this one simply has Ryu standing motionless in front of Jade. The moment you make any move, Jade asks if you had changed your mind. If Ryu remains motionless for too long, Jade gets bored and pits monsters against you to entertain himself. You know what... let's play his game... for a little bit, because I only ever recall ever saying NO to his proposal every time.
BOSS: Jade [5:50]
WHAT THE HELL! Dragon Heart doesn't affect him? The jerk IS a DARK DRAGON! Another plot inconsistency, and don't give me that crap about him becoming a superior being beyond dragons, because that sounds like a load of tripe and Tyr would never have granted him that; she was clearly using him to release her. What in the hell did he transform into anyways? Make sure Puka-Karn is active and use Rudra (or go Agni all together). The same strategy applies as was the battle with Emperor Zog, except this guy has way more HP and has less elemental weaknesses. Bleu should cast BoltX, Nina should reinforce defense, healing and offense of Puka-Karn. I thought I remember him having party-hitting spells besides raining his dandruff on everyone. Bleu once again stole the fatal blow from Ryu... sigh I hate second winds. Beware this jerk can (and I remember) cast instant death spells, though I found it strange he didn't this time... perhaps the developers re-balanced the enemies for the port?
Before heading down to confront the Goddess at long last, be sure to grab both the EmporSD and StarHR. The EmporSD is Ryu's most powerful sword and can cast a fire spell that attacks all enemies for 180HP. The Star Hammer can cast Comet which inflicts a whopping 400HP damage to every enemy, effectively nullifying the need for Bleu to EVER cast anything ever again. Believe me, these things are imperative for the final battle ahead. They may have come late, but they are still every bit as important AND easy to miss if you don't know about them.
