(CCPlays) 1984 Soviet Campaign | Part 15: Missing Nimitz | Cold Waters DotMOD
Previously, in the 1984 Soviet Campaign of Cold Waters... We managed to get away from three different underwater contacts and try to chase down this carrier task group that will sortie from Trondheim, where I am presently...

Welcome to Captain Chang Plays (CCP) Cold Waters. We are playing the 1984 Soviet Campaign at reduced difficulty.

------
We chased the NATO carrier task force from Trondheim to northern Norwegian sea, where we finally intercepted it.
26-AUG-1984 Southwest of Longyearbyen, Greenland Sea
We submerged as the carrier task force seems to be turning back this way.
We submerged, and we IDed at least 6 escorts, plus Nimitz-class carrier, AND an unidentified ship, and we only have four torpedoes for them.
(And frankly, this is where having separate torpedoes for anti-submarine vs anti-surface really sucks)
The plan is actually pretty simple: I doubt we can destroy even one escort, with that many ships that are ready to shoot me. While if I do a suicide charge I can throw enough torpedoes close enough to destroy something, I believe I can serve the Rodina better by staying alive. We are mostly winning the ground war in Europe anyway. So I ordered a more cautious approach. When the escorts can detect me on active, I will fire everything and make a run for it.
As it turns out, none of the torpedoes hit anything. One did latch onto the Nimitz' wake, but did not have enough endurance to chase it down.
I disengaged, and headed back to Murmansk.
looked for a better sub, and since a Victor II is available, I took it. I am now the commander of K-371.
The main difference is Victor II has the new 65 inch tubes, capable of firing the 65-73 long-endurance wakehomers, with a range of 50 km. It also has the TEST-71M, which is roughly equivalent to early NATO Mk 48s... yes, wire-guided dual-purpose torpedoes.
And the war continues in the next episode.
