15-OCT-00 Received new priority orders
MISSION: Intercept and destroy PLAN at-sea replenishment convoy leaving Qingdao Naval base for the Yellow Sea.
Yellow Sea is between China and Korea. I am west of Phillippines, and I need to get out of the shallows. And I managed to do that by passing the east side of Taiwan, then north into East China Sea then Yellow Sea.
17-OCT-00 Convoy sighted and intercepted.
Sonar IDed contacts to the west, which resolved to be a Dajiang class tender, 3 x Jianghu class FF, a Sovremenny DD, and maybe something else. I IDed a Huangfeng patrol craft to south, but it sounds very close to a trawler. We'll wait on that.
Turns out there were 2 x Sovremenny DDs leading 2 x Jianghu and a Jiangwei, with Dajiang in the center. I launched 6 torpedoes east just north of their path, with intention of doglegging them into the convoy from the north.
There is an ASW helo doing dipping sonar to the south/southwest. But it is at least 8 km away. I turned southeast to stay away from the dipper, even as the torpedoes are about to hit their dogleg point, just as the entire convoy zig'ed toward it.
Then sonar ID sierra 8... a new contact, forcing a reallocation of all torpedoes. Sierra 8 turns out to be a Song submarine, spooked by a torpedo I sent after the flank Jianghu FF. I allocated a torpedo for the Song, even as I concentrated on killing all the front rank in the convoy, esp. the Dajiang tender. Then the torpedoes showed me another surprise... There was a Kilo hiding on the far flank of the convoy. That gets priority as well. Two escorts in the back will live a little longer.
The 2 x Sovremennys died first, then the two submarines. I had one torpedo chasing a frigate, as I launched two more torpedoes for the 2 remaining frigates. But what happened to my primary target? As I don't see it anymore, it was probably sunk. The two remaining torpedoes chased down the two frigates, and that's that. Another clean sweep!
Mission accomplished. Brass is pleased.
