Breaking out of prison and heading into the future. Again, the battle system saves the day. Alright, let me really think about this...

Is Chrono Trigger the greatest RPG of all time? No. From where I am sitting in this game, it isn't. While the battle system is cool and innovative, like I wrote in my previous play session, it still has to stack up against all RPGs that have come after it. Say what you will about Final Fantasy 7, I know it's cool now to hate it, but that game is better in every respect. I feel as though nostalgia plays a huge role when folks place Chrono Trigger on such a high pedestal. Same with Final Fantasy 7, and I don't care much for that game either, but it's still better than Chrono Trigger.

Am I hating my time with Chrono Trigger? No. It's fun. I may not think it's the greatest, but I am still enjoying my time with it. Even if the story isn't yet engaging me, the gameplay is a nice simple diversion from the more complex Pokemon Sword. But Square has always been more subversive in their storytelling. When I play older SquareSoft games, I tend to read more critically. Nintendo heavily censored many games that came from Japan because the culture was, at least in 1995, vastly different. I think a critical reading of this story will give me something more to sink my teeth into rather than take everything at face value. This is why I believe Lucca is gay or trans? Lucca identifying as female and having a crush on Marle would be the best thing to ever happen to this game.

Until the next play session.
