Chrono Trigger: Part 01
To begin, this is the iOS version of the game played through my AppleTV 5th Gen. hooked up to my computer.
On to why. If I'm being honest, I don't understand what the deal is with Chrono Trigger and why it's so beloved. I remember when this was released for the Super Nintendo, I was a 15-year-old flipping through maybe a Nintendo Power, Electronic Gaming Monthly, or some other gaming magazine I subscribed to at the time and seeing the advertisements. I was just getting into RPG's and wanted to play something with depth and story. Chrono Trigger should have clicked with me, but I would get a few hours in and quit. I liked the characters, the story was cool, the battle system is excellent, but something wasn't connecting with me.
Over the years, I tried to play it, and still, I would play for a few hours and bail. I could never fall in love with this game. Now, I sort of need to play it. MinnMax has chosen this game as their Deepest Dive. I don't want to say I'm a little disappointed. But I'm a little disappointed. Haha. Who knows, this may be different. I may finally get passed wherever I stopped last time and finally find what makes this game so magical. So, how were my first 2 hours?
I played these hours before. I played these hours many times before, and I still couldn't remember the details of what I was supposed to do at the Millennial Fair. Every time I play this game, I wander around like a moron. I always forget that what I do at the fair will come back to haunt me. I never know how to trigger events. I always make the wrong decisions. It's just such an aggravating part of the game. Yet, this is one of the most memorable parts for so many people. I legit hate it.
Then I'm whisked away to the past where the Queen was kidnapped. My new friend Marle has been mistaken as the queen, where she mysteriously disappears, and I have to go on the hunt for the real Queen. This portion of the game I feel relatively confident playing. It would have been nice if I had more Potions, but that was a mistake I made when I visited the shop and didn't purchase them before venturing to the castle, or the church. This is where you begin leveling and gaining new attacks. I do really love the battle system, and the attacks are fantastic. Being able to pair up and attack an enemy, or groups of enemies, was relatively innovative at the time.
Regardless of how cool everything was, the story is weak. We should bear in mind this game released in 1995. Video game stories weren't these epics they are today, but even by 1995 standards, this is all very trope-ish. Not a bad thing, but lets put it in perspective. From the beginning to where I am in the game now, this game relies heavily on its mechanics.
Next, we are taken back to our time where I was put on trial for the kidnapping of the Princess. Yes, Marle is Princess Nadia. This where the decisions you made at the fair come back to haunt you. However, it doesn't matter if you are found guilty or innocent, the result is always the same. You are jailed and sentenced to death. There is this illusion that what you do has any real effect in the game. Other than some text differences, and a handful of Ethers, you're going along a linear story.
That's RPGs, right? They are designed to tell you an engaging story. As of now, this story isn't engaging me. I do like the main characters, they are designed well, and I am hoping Lucca is queer. If she isn't, in my story, she is, and I hope that will add a little flavor to this rather bland story. To be fair, the game is about 25 hours long, there is still plenty of time for the story to go somewhere. I just hope it gets there fast.
