DFFOO [JP][Memoria Battle 4][Thematic Alt run] FFVI 1 PT clear: Bad Luck Locke, A6/D5/C. Ability 3
I was going to do one with Sabin with extreme cap, but someone else does a 500K Sabin already and my baby account test run could only push him to around 3xxK+16% without UW+5 and other crystal passives (still did around 129m with EX, mind you XD). So I went to something else for inspiration for main acocunt.
A viewer expressed that he wanted to see me doing a run with only FFVI character dealing with Kefka in Memoria Battle 4. I originally thought that would drag on for far too long, but curiosity got the better of me again, so I tried it. To my considerable surprise, it only lasts around 22m, and the process of procuring resources, strats, timing was actually a lot of fun. It felt like a culmination of utilising tricks that we have learned and earned. So it has been quite a satisfying experience.
Timeline Reference:
00:00 Setup phase
01:44 FT 1 - Leo
05:22 FT 1 retention
06:02 Caius CA - 1st threshold
09:09 FT 2 - Locke (all BT)
12:18 Cait CA - 2nd threshold
13:34 FT 2 retention
14:42 Locke BT phase
17:41 FT 3 - Leo
Again, this party only uses FFVI character as the main party. It is a 3FT but 1PT clear. Quite a lot of technical details, so I will just lay down the setup this time.
All characters have HA+3/BT+3/FE 50, their respective crystal room completed
Locke: U4/A6/D5, Caius CA
Leo: U4/D3/D6, Cait Sith CA
Celes: U4/D3/D6, Noel CA
Since I have three crystal rooms completed, that means I have access to crystal ability 3 - Speed.
Rationale:
Kefka has a lot of health and two thresholds that would waste your time and DPS. With this party, most of the DPS would be coming from Locke and Leo's follow-up (well pretty balanced party, and most importantly, I only have the 3 of them from FFVI!). Dealing dmg would have to be efficient, and only Locke BT has the capability of making everything ignore defence. So there are a very finite amount of chances that you can cancel Kefka's 20T 100% HP recovery FT. This party does not have the burst DPS to take a huge chunk of Kefka's health away, so I just played it safe and segmented it into 3 FTs.
The goal of the 1st FT was to push the boss to close to or pass 79% if possible while establishing max retention % (by extension, get to 999% before it ended), such that I could deal with the first threshold mechanic outside of FT. Among the three of them, only Leo FR is compatible with everyone. No BT was used because I didn't want Leo's BT running out during intensive DPS phases.
2nd FT was a DPS phase to push pass 59% and get Kefka as low as possible. That's why everyone had their BT on. Since the 3rd FT was also an actual DPS phase, I wanted all of their BT to remain. So I used Locke's BT phase during retention after 2nd FT to gain FG, shave off as much HP from Kefka as he could while the others get only few moves. This was also to make sure that Locke BT was on to cancel Kefka's FT again, such that in case he didn't die after 3rd FT, I would have time to kill him during 3rd retention.
3rd FT was the kill phase. The notable things I did was using crystal ability 3 here to let Locke move like he has a BT phase while Leo's turn got replaced. I also saved summon here to skip Kefka's 20% threshold, so that he didn't use forsaken and put up a big HP shield. Despite having bad luck, Locke killed Kefka within summon and FT, so it was great.
Other notable things:
Caius CA?
On one hand, Caius LDCA instantly rebreaks targets. So it kills the threshold event immediately. On the other hand, his CA inflicts doom. So you can actually use his CA as a latent time bomb to break Kefka on his own turn, instead of wasting yours. Celes would tank the big BRV gain hit anyways, so there would have been no danger regardless.
My only disappointment to this run was that I forgot to lay down his doom again for his second threshold for an auto break.
A6/D5 on Locke? What kind of weird combo is that?
This was to squeeze out as much DPS on Locke as possible while keeping him alive. The HP sap from A6 is 40%, D5 regens 10%, his own treasure hunter buff regens 10%, Celes also heals him and then his BT heals anyone below 50% back to 50% anyways. It was very unlikely for him to die and he would be constantly below 70% to enjoy that free 20% cap increase from A6 on his turns.
Also, D3/D6 was on the other two to make them slow. More Celes trap activation was a bonus.
Crystal Ability 3? What does it do?
I just unlocked it and this is the biggest and most calculated application I have done. Basically it gives the on turn user 2 free immediate turns, and substitute the 2 immediate turns from the selected party member (in this case, Leo) with your current character. Therefore, you would see Locke everywhere while Leo just temporarily disappeared during FT 3. It made Locke have most of the DPS turns while keeping Leo's follow-up.
Overall, there was a lot of bad luck on acquiring Locke's HP+. He pulled through regardless, and this run was a great exercise for some thinking.
