Doom Wads/Mods #493:MAYhem 2048
1https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/megawads/mayhem14 With community projects, I'm always looking for the next big thing when I sit down to them, one that always brings my interest back is the MAYhem series where mappers create as many maps as they can within the month of May, it was also begun by the mind of TheMionicDonut. This release, the third in the series is the first Megawad produced by the MAYhem mappers and of the releases, its the one that caught my attention for taking inspiration from a then popular game named 2048.
Released on November 20th 2014 and honored as a runner up at that year's cacoawards, MAYhem 2048 has 35 maps in total to it's name with an all star team including James Paddock, James Caldwell, Pcrof, Archi, Breezeep, Chris Hansen and more all contributing to this 3rd installment of the MAYhem series. MAYhem 2012 and 2013 I'll go over one day but MAYhem 2048 makes them both look like small potatoes.
What really impresses me about MAYhem 2048 is the fact that each map, despite being limited to a 2048x2048 playable space has so much detail to them in 2014, every map has its own puzzles and challenges to keep you moving and on your toes, custom "chocolate" imps that I recognized from Eternal Doom are here and also there are new sound effects add too.
MAYhem 2048 is also a perfect demonstration of gradual difficulty with MAYhem 2048 not being hard at first but then challenging you with Plutonia Experiment style ambushes and so forth in later levels, ammo never feels placed in poor amounts along with health, though a few times I felt my heart skip a beat when those sneaky trap doors/walls opened behind me which I wouldn't expect any less, the only poor part is the final map which still ranks as among my least favorite map30 encounters, But for all the content here, MAYhem 2048 is incredible, I'd call it the best out of all the wads made in the MAYhem series.
