How to Check Warranty on iPhone to See if it's Refurbished or New
0Find the Serial Number:
Open Settings - General - About on your iPhone.
Note the Serial Number (or copy it).
Alternatively, find it on the original box, SIM tray (older models), or by dialing *#06# for the IMEI, which can be cross-referenced.
Time: 1 minute.
Check Warranty on Apple’s Website:
Go to checkcoverage.apple.com on any browser (phone or computer).
Enter the Serial Number, complete the CAPTCHA, and click Continue.
Review the results:
Valid Purchase Date: Indicates the device was activated through Apple. A recent date (within 1–2 years) suggests it’s likely new; an older date may indicate refurbished or used.
Limited Warranty:
Active Warranty (e.g., “Expires: [Date]”): New and Apple Certified Refurbished iPhones come with a one-year limited warranty from the activation date. If the warranty is active and the purchase date is recent, it’s likely new; if older but still under warranty, it could be Apple Certified Refurbished.
Expired Warranty: Suggests a used or third-party refurbished device unless extended with AppleCare.
AppleCare Eligible: If you see “Eligible for AppleCare” with an active warranty, the device is likely new or Apple Certified Refurbished (within 60 days of activation for new devices).
Repairs and Service Coverage: If active, it confirms warranty or AppleCare status.
Time: 2–3 minutes.
Check Model Number in Settings:
In Settings - General - About, look at the Model Number (starts with a letter):
M: Brand-new iPhone sold by Apple.
F: Apple Certified Refurbished (sold by Apple with a new battery, outer shell, and one-year warranty).
N: Replacement device (e.g., from a warranty claim, treated like new/refurbished by Apple).
P: Personalized/engraved iPhone (typically new).
Combine this with warranty status:
M + Active Warranty + Recent Purchase Date: Likely new.
F + Active Warranty: Apple Certified Refurbished.
N + Active/Expired Warranty: Replacement, possibly refurbished.
M/N + Expired Warranty: Likely used or third-party refurbished.
