How to Play Music Through Your Mic – Easy Method
In this tutorial I show you how to play music through your mic. The easiest method to play music through your microphone is to use SteelSeries Sonar. With Sonar you get access to virtual audio devices which can be used to separate audio. However, you can also enable Streamer Mode which will give you access to a Stream Mix. With the Stream Mix enabled selected audio devices can be combined into one track that can be used as your microphone. This means you can set your voice to be heard on the stream mix, as well as the application that is playing the sound.
To enable Streamer Mode you will need to click the switch in the top right corner of the Sonar page. When enabled for the first time a window may appear to explain what enabling Streamer Mode does. Once Streamer Mode has been enabled you will need to adjust your devices on the master panel. The playback device is the device you hear audio through and mic input is the microphone you are using. However, the Stream Mix will need to be set to SteelSeries Sonar – Stream to play music through your mic.
The next step is to play the sound you want other people to hear through your microphone. If you are playing a file then you will want to choose something longer or set the sound to loop for the setup. Alternatively, if you are playing sound through an application then you will need to set it to play. Once done you will see the application playing sound listed in one of the Apps boxes in SteelSeries Sonar. The device it is under is the device that will be used for your sound. You can drag the application to a different box to switch which device mix it uses. You will want to select a device that is only going to be used to play music through your microphone, as anything that uses your selected device will be heard. Typically, you will want to use either the Media or Aux device.
For each virtual audio device you will notice a headset and stream icon. When the headset icon is enabled, you will be able to hear the sound through your playback device. If the stream icon is enabled, then the audio from that device will be added to your stream mix. When disabled both icons will be greyed out and have a slash through them.
To play sound through your mic you will need to enable the stream icon for the audio device playing the sound. You can also toggle the headset icon depending on if you want to hear the sound as well or not. Typically, you will want to set only your microphone and device that is playing the sound to be heard on your stream mix. Meaning all other devices should have the headset enabled and not the stream mix.
Once you have Sonar setup correctly you will need to set your input device on applications to use the SteelSeries Sonar – Stream Mix option. This will allow you to play music through your mic on Discord and other applications like games. If you don’t select the stream mix then your sound won’t be played through your microphone.
