Cole and Roy come to Sunset Boulevard and end up assisting Wallis as he pursues the group of store robbers with three police officers eventually killing them all in an shootout within the construction site. Afterwards, two detectives ask Wallis about his last run-in with Jimmy LeBlanc, learning that he had a partner, namely a strongman whom he identifies as "Willy" and who escaped when LeBlanc was captured with Cole theorizing that Willy was involved in murders of both Julia Randall and his own partner in crime due to his physical strength allowing him to easily overpower Randall and hold her down as she was forcibly administered an OD of morphine and inflict the type of severe head injuries that killed Jimmy LeBlanc. Upon returning to the station, Cole is shown a list of valuable items reported as stolen during the previous 12 months with the owner of both fabrege cigarette case that Henry Arnette tried to pawn and black sapphire ring found on Julia Randall's corpse belonging to a woman named Beverly Evestrom and revealing Henry to be a thief. Deciding to notify her, Cole and Roy head to her home and learn that both items were stolen while she was attending a social function hosted by Dr. Stoneman and his wife. As they talk, Heather Swanson enters the house, revealing herself to be Beverly's daughter with two detectives telling Heather that her fiance stole from her family, an accusation which she refuses to believe. Due to this, Cole and Roy decide to take Heather along as they prepare to confront Henry in his own apartment and force him to confess his crimes. However, as they approach his apartment, Cole hears a commotion within and kicks the door in, finding Henry on the ground and an unknown man, assumed to be Willy, escaping through the window with Cole pursuing him but ultimately being knocked out with Willy escaping. Upon returning to the apartment and interrogating Henry, Cole learns that the burglary ring was actually led by Julia as she wanted the money to fuel her vapid materialism with the targets being wealthy people who attended parties held by Dr. Stoneman and his wife, Henry also revealing that Stoneman himself provided the list of guests to Julia in order to let her and her associates rob them, having done it out of blind infatuation with Julia. He ultimately admits to have paid LeBlanc and his partner to kill Julia when she refused to let him leave the gang in order to settle down with Heather. After arresting Henry, Cole and Roy head to Stoneman's office and confront him with the doctor confessing to have assisted Julia with the burglaries out of hope that she will eventually love him back but ultimately realized that she was just stringing him along on the promise she never intended to fullfill with Stoneman, wrecked with guilt for the damage he caused, proceeding to kill himself by jumping out of his office window before either Cole or Roy can stop him. Afterwards, Cole is contacted by R&I who confirm Willy's identity as that of a former wrestler named Wilson Reade and provide his adress, allowing two detectives to track him down. Upon being found, Reade makes a run for it, forcing Cole and Roy to pursue him over the rooftops, eventually cornering him atop neon sign where they kill him after a brief two-on-one shootout...
